Cheryl Cole insists it is really over!
Cheryl Cole has finally dashed love rat Ashley’s lingering hopes of a reunion – in a phone chat with his mother Sue.
The crocked ace, 29, has been pestering his wife with texts and Sue called to see if she could smooth things over.
The pair had a friendly chat but Cheryl, 26, made clear to her mum-in-law she would never take him back.
When Sue broke the news to Ashley – to whom she speaks up to six times daily – it finally dawned on him the game was up.
The Chelsea and England star reluctantly took off his wedding ring at the injuries clinic in Biarritz, France, where he is recovering from a broken ankle.
A source close to his estranged wife said yesterday: “Sue has been trying to act as intermediary between Cheryl and Ashley and doing her best to help them patch up their differences. She loves Cheryl and obviously hates seeing her son hurt.
“Cheryl has been going through so much pain she initially didn’t want to take any calls – even from her mother-in-law.
“But they finally spoke and Cheryl made clear there is no going back. The marriage is over and she can’t take him back.
“They spoke calmly and fondly to one another and there was certainly no screaming or shouting.
“When Sue passed on the message, Ashley was gutted. The wedding ring came off. He’s cocked up big-time. Now he needs to face up to his actions.”
The couple have not met since Cheryl issued a statement through her publicist last week announcing the end of their four-year marriage. Her estranged husband had been begging for a chance to plead his case to her face-to-face after being linked with five women.
Last week there were hints she might agree to meet him for showdown talks.
